A blocked sewer pipe running under Ascot Vale Leisure Centre that burst in early March has caused significant damage and contamination to the change rooms at the centre.
Due to the extensive works required, including replacement of the change room facilities and the sewer line, the change rooms will remain closed for some months.
Council officers, contractors and centre staff along with our insurers are working hard to replace the change facilities and ensure the centre is fully operational as soon as possible.
Our hygienists have been working around the clock to clear the contamination and bring the change room facilities to a condition that allows builders to access the space, and they only gave us the green light to enter the impacted area yesterday.
The health and safety of our community is our top priority and so this has been an important step in avoiding any cross contamination of the centre. For this reason, the change rooms will only be opened once it’s safe to do so.
In the meantime, the following facilities have been made available:
- The upstairs toilets
- Temporary portable toilets, including accessible toilets, located external to the pool and gym
- Dry change cubicles located on the pool deck
- Six private showers and open air showers on the pool deck for use by bathers.
In response to feedback from members, three temporary shower blocks will also be delivered to the centre in the next week.
As the issue stemmed from the sewer line running beneath the building, the replacement works are very complicated and time consuming. As soon as we have a firm date for completion we will let you know.
Information on the progress of the works will be sent to members via SMS, email and social media and updates will be available on the centre’s website.
