Residents lobby Minister for train station

Wednesday, 30 October In

Local residents have stepped up and joined our call for a train station at Airport West.

Since launching our latest campaign for a train station at Airport West last week, we’ve been overwhelmed with submissions from residents to the Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan.

"We've already received close to 100 submissions from members of the community lobbying the State Government for a station to fill the transport black hole in the area,” Moonee Valley Mayor Cr Samantha Byrne said.

“Currently it takes the same amount of time to get to the city from Airport West on public transport as it does to get to the city from Geelong. That’s just shameful, and our residents are fed up.”

Airport West resident Nikolas wrote to the Minister: “As a university student who lives in Airport West, my daily commute is by default more than one hour. I consider this rather poor, considering the suburb is situated only 12 kilometres from the CBD.”

John and Joyce, who’ve lived in Airport West for 60 years, said when they moved in they were told a supermarket and a train station would follow soon. “I think it is time now for the train station as we are a growing community and have waited long enough. We have the shopping centre why not the train station?”

Ben told the Minister: “Airport West is an island suburb surrounded by freeways but for people with disabilities and wanting to go into the city it is hard. I don’t drive and getting onto a bus or a tram is very hard. A train would be so much better because it gives people better wheelchair options.”

Carla wrote: “Dear Minister, I hope that you will consider the campaign for a station at Airport West seriously. I am currently on maternity leave and once I return to work (located in the CBD), a station close by to my home in Keilor East will mean I can get home sooner to my twin boys and spend less time travelling to and from a distantly located station.”

With the State Government recently releasing its preferred alignment and station precincts for the first stage of the Suburban Rail Loop and the Airport Rail Link Business Plan process well underway, we’re ramping up our fight for a station at Roberts Rd in Airport West to service residents and workers in Airport West, Keilor East and Essendon Fields.

Our new campaign includes a cinema ad at Village Cinemas Airport West and bus stickers on buses travelling on the Airport West, Keilor East and Tullamarine routes.

Visit our campaign website stillwaiting.com.au for facts and information about why we need a train station and for supporters to leave a message for the Minister.
